Blu-ray movies use any of several codecs, not limited to "MPEG-4 AVC / H.264" as you stated in the article. Codecs common to commercially replicated BD titles also include MPEG-2 and VC1.

can you use these recorders in any other country besides japan? the reason why i\'d like to know is that i live in japan now, but move frequently. i\'m considering the purchase of one of these but i\'d like to know if it works. perhaps some of the features (timetable, etc) won\'t work, but what features will, and what features won\'t?

I think that some people here are misinterpreting what this new Panasonic does. It doesn't just record on HDD in MPEG2 and H.264, it can record on Blu-ray DISC as well. You can archive your saved HD programs from your HDD to BD-R or BD-RE discs and play them on other BD devices. And because it uses the more efficienct AVC codec, it can save more programming on a single BD disc than previous Blu-ray recorders. Even cooler is that the Panasonic will record full HD on recordable DVD media as well, only with less recording time.
I have a PS3 too and love it, but it can't do any of the above.

Wish my PS3 can record... oh well.. would've been nice recording tv shows instead of buying box sets.
