"The MacBookAir is Badly Designed and Too Expensive to Produce" said Japanese Engineers

Rate this News:  BadPoorAverageGoodExcellent

Here's a very interesting bit of news from Tech-On, an English Website of the giant Nikkei. Apparently the magazine gathered some “engineers” from different manufacturers and striped down a MacBook Air in order to study it.

The engineers all came to the same conclusion; the MacBook Air is badly designed and would cost too much to produce (meaning that there are better ways to do the job cheaper).

I'm a bit surprised by the arrogance of some of these so called engineers. I'm not a PRO Apple Fan Boy (even if I do own a MacBook Pro), but a sentence like this one makes me mad: “I can’t find anything that is technically superior. We can make the same computer at a lower cost”

Really? So what the FXXCK are you waiting for? No offense to some Japanese engineers I admire and happen to know, but such bold statement from someone who pretends to be an engineer from a major PC manufacturer in Japan makes me laugh. Especially when you look at all these bulky devices that are available right now in Japan.

Conclusion. I am sure that there is some room for improvement on the MacBook Air, but this article is somehow typical from the Japanese media. The WORLD can't it do better than Japan… A bit like the so called journalists from the Japanese car program "Best Motoring" who are indeed extremely good drivers but a group of jerks who always demonstrate that Japanese cars, whatever models, are superiors to foreign ones…

Once again this proves to us that journalism in Japan does not exist.

Good grief: \"Journalism in Japan does not exist\" you say?

Well, all I can add is it certainly doesn\'t exist on your badly written, rip-off site.

dude, i think you are an APPLE FAN BOY by reading the article. look at Thinkpad X300 only 800g heavier and it's packed with ethernet, 2 extra usb, DVD!! better resolution! IT BACKS UP that what Japanese engineer said: so your article is worthless, sorry.

I also agree that the mac book is bad designed. I just allways wonder how much these people get paid who write these articles, like the one above, don't you feel embarrased by those spelling mistakes ? My mother language also is not english but at least spell check your writings.

Come on, that article of so true. The Air is just full of it...AIR.

Have you seen the Toshiba Dynabook SS RX?

That laptop was out before Air, and it also sports a DVD, 3x USB, 1x SD Reader, 1x PCMCIA, 1x iLink, RGB, and still keeps it under 1100g. Trust me it will also fit in a same envelope Jobs used on his KeyNote...=P

Japanese engineers RULEZ!!!!!

Just like all Apple products, there is nothing technologically superior. Apple's strengths are in aesthetic design and marketing. The iPod is the perfect example. Many, many Japanese products are better, smaller, more features, etc (even the Chinese rip offs are better) but Apple makes a slick product. The Japanese MP3 players are fugly.

I totally agree. Sadly there is a strong arrogance with many Japanese engineers.
Most of the time there is no reason for this arrogance since they are not able to do any better.
Often it seems they are just pissed, cause they did not have this idea. Then they talk bad about the product. Kind of a weak charakter.
This uppish behaviour lets them make many mistakes. Then they search somebody to blame for their mistakes.
All this makes it no fun to work in Japan.

About "real" journalism in Japan: There is none in mass media.

Comparing currently selling subnotebooks, the Air is cutting edge as a package deal.
It does not matter, whether the engineers could potentially do better, because if the consumer cannot buy that sweet device, it is the same as if they could not.

Of course, the Air looses in some categories to others like the Chinese Lenovo X300, but in the product portfolio of Apple and compared to those other machines it has distinctive selling points. Except me, at least management, marketing and sales departments of Apple seem to think so. It is not just about the engineers, else Sony would fare much better today.
Also, isn\'t technology globalized? Apple designs in California, with electronics mostly from Taiwan and surely an international staff there.

The Nikkei piece is just a commentary and those agreeing maybe have a hurt pride, because of a sinking market share and less labor market flexibility compared to their foreign counterparts?

I really dont want to admit it, but what lets Apple get away with the high retail price is not the cost of engineering or the superiority of the products (although OSX is Superior to Windows), IT'S THE BRAND! I can go into the whole marketing talk but let's talk. It's everything to do with the brand. It's true that a similar computer can be built at a lower cost, and it has been done. But it won't run bloody OSX and technically, that means it's going to be less superior to the Macs. But if you think about it, Sony's and Toshiba's are very well made laptops, and much cheaper to make and repair, only because parts are EVERYWHERE (90% of the computer market says so). But...they run Windows.

I also think that the MacBook Air is not good enough. And actually I can\'t understand, why there\'s so much mess about it on the web

It seems to me the MacBook Air was a great mistake. It doesn\'t even bring money.

Actually i would rather get a Toshiba Protege R500
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3769

It isn't as thin but at least i'm not paying more for less.

The AC adaptor for Macbook Air is probably thicker anyway >.<

It is good if the price drops by maybe 30%

I agree with previous poster that the Toshiba R500 is one of the finest ultraportables. Two colleagues have them, another has a Sony TZ and I have a Sony TX2.

The Sonys are fragile, I worry about holding mine the wrong way and putting too much pressure on the case.

The Toshs are superlight, feel better made, have a docking connector as well as network + optical drive + usb + wifi (abgn) + firewire +++.

If I were starting again, I'd buy the Tosh now. I'd not consider the air as it's basically a status symbol, not a serious tool

Very few Apple products compete with "high end" products in power or tech anymore.
They sell because they make and market a "trendy" product. It looks "cool", feels "cool", so it must be cool right?!? LoL.

Its a review of a review and Apple doesn't make broken junk. Just not the best.

(I primarily use PCs)

Normal MacBook (Pro)'s are great. Good performance and sweet design.
This is even more design, but less performance. A shame, if you ask me.

How about throwing some more objectivity in the writing in order to avoid sounding like a douchebag.

As previously mentioned the Air isn't a patch on other subnotebooks. The tosh SS has been out for months and smokes the air. smaller, lighter, more features. Bar the gimmick marketing of thinnest (at one point) and the nice OSX there isn't any other reason to get one. Then there are the new sub notebooks being released this year which just leave the Air standing.

Have a macbook myself but only because it was on supersale, otherwise wouldn't spend the premium on one! Unless you're an Apple fanboy.

ok, apple rulez, oh it's a joke, they make goods for idiots thats it. Fashion is for fan boys and fags (almost the same thing) and of course for women that prefer beauty shit against functional goods.
Oh shure, japanese are all cheater, because they have the 2nd world biggest economy based on technological production only manufacturing junk, bad cars, bad electronic, bad robots and so all bad.
Well, consumers are all idiots, they prefer to buy worst than better.
I like to listen the true about Japan and other stuffs but when somebody says Japanese don't know about something they are the pros, I know the guy is a complete STUPID.

Ha-ha... Of course it is badly designed. Especially, when iMac is one of the cheapest solution among best machines from most known brands. Of course all Macs are crap, because their sales too much boom Japan and is so high that Hitachi officially died on laptop market, still generating beige boxes for server crap that only idiots buys. Of course Apple production is "badly designed", because Sony is also pissed off by Apple and loses market day by day...

Seriously, if you don't like the fact that the MBA has 1 usb, no dvd, no ethernet and misc holes on the side of the laptop, then you're not the target audience for this product. (who even uses the stupid ethernet port or modem port anyways? To be truthful, I've never used 1 in 5 years !)
I had my MBA for months and to be honest, I've never ached over the 1 usb or lack of dvd drive(I use networked images so I don't even need the drive).

I love the fact that its so thin and feels super sturdy, with a super bright LED screen. In terms quality, (lets not even talk about osx vs windows) AAPL beats any Sony, Tosbhia & HP. I'm not teasing you, but to say the Japanese can build better quaility computers is BS. They're all made of flimsy and fulgy plastic that gets so hot it'll melt your balls when you put it on your lap. You won't trust me, but you'll have to compare them side by side and you will see the Huge difference.

It's a good thing though, that some people don't see the true value of Macs. So I won't be sitting next to you with the same computer :>
