DIY SSD Drive Test : a RAID5 HDD with 3 Compact Flash

Many say that SSD are the future of mobile computing and notebooks, but unfortunately they are still pretty expensive, so what about making one yourself? Many had the idea of doing so but too few were able to make it happen, until today. Thanks to Century and GeekStuff4U.com you will be now able to build up your very own SATA SSD thanks to 3 CF, the very same CF that can buy found in many DSLRs.

Even if today we will talk about the SATA version, keep in mind that an IDE version is also available and that both these SSD support either RAID 0 or 5.

Depending of your needs or your budget, you will either have the choice to use 1, 2 or 3 CF at the same time, but remember that 3 CF are needed for a RAID 5 configuration. Our photo gallery and video below will show you the 2 different setting with 3 CF in RAID 0 then RAID 5.
As you will see you do not need, but it is highly recommended and this for performances issues, to use 3 identical CF in either speed or capacity. But keep in mind that the maximum speed of your all setting will be in fact the maximum speed offered by your slowest CF.

Well images worth a 1000 words so just relax and watch our video, and if you are interested, these DIY SDDs are available here at GeekStuff4U.com

Very poor way of reviewing! If you can't do it well, dont.

Whenever someone wanna buy a Flash SSD, they will look for speed & MTBF. And since your review is unable to provide MTBF, then at least get a proper branded CF card with market leading speed like SanDisk Extreme Ducati 8GB, 45MB/s.

Having such a slow card and even have the cheek to mention the speed is limited by the slowest card. Unprofessional !
If you are review/promoting this DIY Drive, at least do it with the Max speed not the slowest.

I have to protect the author. This was a very good review. If you want speed rating then go and check the manufacturers rating of you CF card and you got it.

you had better have three really fast CF cards in order for this to be useful. if you actually watch the video, you'll see that the array only gets 10MB/s in RAID 0 and 9 in RAID5. Now of course, he's using three different cards, but is buying this adapter and 3 premium CF cards really better than buying two regular SATA drives which will give you better performance and more capacity?

The whole point of raid (0 and 5) is to get increased speed over one drive. The only reason this would be useful is if it was used with high speed CF card. The first poster is right, this review is simply not helpful as it doesn't reflect the intended use of the product. What is th point of putting 5 dollar CF cards in a 200 dollar device?
