Canon's 5D Mark II: The World's First Forbidden HD Video, Finally Official!!

Monday we released some new 5D Mark II Full HD video screenshots . Today, Canon Japan finally agreed to let us release the world's first unofficial Canon 5D Mark II (Beta Version) video.

Tokyo Reality (Canon 5D Mark II) Final

During some free time from work David (our photographer) and Florent (our video editor for NihonCar.com and ManualGear.com), put together a STUNNING Canon 5D Mark II video demo. We noticed it was made without technical support, only two little hands to carry the camera, and a MacBook Pro for video editing.

One word, congrats!!!!!!

Our setting were pretty simple, we used a Canon 5D Mark II, with the following Canon lenses:

14mm f2.8L II
17-40mm f4L
50mm f1.4
90mm TS-E f2.8
135mm f2.0L

...along with your average MacBookPro 15" (old gen). No color FX on the video.

What are the chances of finding out who those two songs are by?

Oh, and the video quality is startling from a DSLR...

Chances are big, if you'd stay till the credit part of the video.

Why is it, that the comments people leave sometimes are really stupid?

Jocko: The credits to the music are in the credits.

Luthur: Hey dumbass! The info says it was edited with a MacBook Pro.

I have read nothing but positive feedback on this camera. This looks to be the first consumer-based camera to do still and video in HD, with a price the average consumer could afford. Great job Canon!!!

Is this going to be available in America?

If so how much will it go for?

The quality is unbelievable and no doubt this will be a huge hit in the market

@ DeanC - try not to be so insulting to others.

As to the first HD recording DSLR - Nikon beat Canon to it with their D90, though the cameras will be aimed at slightly different groups (the D700 being the rival to this).

As with all things Canon/Nikon I'm sure the clincher for most people will be based upon their existing lens collection.

Did you hear that there is no Auto Focus in Video mode? That should eliminate about 90% of people who want to use it for fun.

This video showcaes its handheld use more than anything IMO. Also its shallow depth of field using fast glass. To me thats the best part of it for videographers. The video quality itself is not ground breaking, just the ability of being able to use different lenses.

This camera might end up being just as popular with semi pro movie people as it is with photographers.

I see photographers buying it for the novelty of it and then realizing 30 mins of video is going to take up 12 gigs of CF cards and that they have to manuall focus constantly.

lol.....that should be the end of that love affair.

Anyone knows if the IS of the Canon lenses works with the HD video of this camera?.

It is the first dSLR to do 1080p, the Nikon does 720p.

It will be available in America for $2699 with an arrival date of December 2008.

It does do autofocus while shooting video.

I would also point out that most people who do much shooting in RAW (people likely to buy a 5d) generally have a lot more than 12GB of CF card.

I have 8 16GB (128GB of CF) UDMA cards and a 160GB 'portable HD' that can quickly backup and empty full CF cards.

Can the camera be tethered to a laptop in video mode and use computer's hard drive for storage?
What is the file size of an individual frame?

a beautiful, beautiful, video !! . . . here I am in Akihabara right now, and watching the video, I am missing Tokyo!!! all while being in the very heart of Tokyo!! Incredible . . . I think I will get away from the computer for a while and take a walk in the beauty all around in Tokyo that the video has done such a great job of reminding me of.

But before that, how do we write to Canon to request that you be given unlimited opportunity to make longer video?

For anyone who likes beautiful film with music, also take a look at Powaqqatsi,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095895/ ,
and Koyaanisqatsi,

jjackallenn: The length of the video is not something that can be extended, as the FAT32 file system which the CF's use can only hold files up to 4GB in size.

That is just exceptional video quality and the music matches the video well.

Hi there,
What lens is being used? In some of the shots i notice there's some lens distortion - just wondering if this is for effect or if this is a result of being fully zoomed out on any lens?
Thanks

too static video and movies capture!

Boring if a video reduces to that.

I'm therefore not convinced at all of such a feature on a photos camera.
