This is neat, But Schwinn has had the elec. assist bikes out (for sale on the open market) for two years now, same setup, in many diifferent models. the top of the line being a shaft drive internal 7 sp rear hub commuter. http://www.schwinnelectricbikes.com/Default_in.aspx

This is a big step forward, way beyond the Schwinn electric bikes. Effective regenerative braking hugely extends the range and makes this a much more useful machine.

I like the comment about Schwinn having an electric bike. The law in Japan changed the exact same day that Sanyo announced this bike. It is a market first for the Japanese market.
Various countries around the world have various laws governing what constitutes an electric bicycle and what counts as a motorbike. In Japan, this used to be a motorbike by law, requiring a license and additional fees--now it doesn't need any of those things, as the law changed.
