Yep, but DoCoMo, was the first to get a 3G Network in Japan and in the World, it was in October 2001 (initial launch was suppose to be in May 2001)

Heh, my first "keitai" was FOMA P905i, surprisingly good 3G-enabled GSM-capable, perfectly working in... Russia ^_^. Yep, no i-mode/Jawa/GPS/1seg/FeliCa here, but the phone itself works. Soon we will have 3G allover the world. If not 4G...

When I used to live there, I remember my first one wasn't a "keitai" per se, but a PHS: Toshiba Carrots... no 3G back then, but was able to connect it to a modem running a fast 28.8Kbps!

PHS are still widely use (Willcom) and until last year I still had a PHS Card from my laptop 300kbps.

my 1st visit in japan was in august 2002 and i was amazed by the 3g phones. cant find a picture of the phone i used then...
