My Doraemon Robot Hands-on

Announced early this summer, the “My Doraemon” robot is now available in Japan. For those who are un-aware of the “My Doraemon” concept, let’s say this little robot is more like an advanced figure than an actuall robot. No, the Doraemon can't walk or move its arms… only its head and thanks to its “e-paper” eyes and mimics many of the real Doraemon's expressions.

Sold in Japan for between 30,000 to 40,000 Yen, My Doraemon is nonetheless quite an impressive little buddy. With a vocabulary of 1300 words and many sensors, Doreamon interacts with you and gives you information about your surroundings. If something falls around Doraemon and makes a loud noise, Doraemon will tell you how scary the noise was and that something just happened. If the temperature drops or increases suddenly Doraemon will tell you, and thanks to its many sensors, Doraemon can track your movements…

Another surprising thing is Doraemon talks. You have to (of course) talk to it in Japanese, but you can have a basic conversation with it. If you come and say to Doraemon, "Let’s go outside and have fun," Doraemon may reply, "No sorry, I'd rather stay home and watch anime…"

Bandai's “My Doraemon” may be expensive if you don't speak Japanese, but I was impressed by its overall quality, vocabulary, and its ability to interact... Now I'll bring back this baby home and see how my two year old daughter reacts with it!
