Fujitsu's Lifebook U2010 (FMV-Biblo Loox U) Hands-on

We’re just back from a Fujitsu press conference where we were invited over by their nice team that introduced several laptops, notebooks, and UMPCs.

Let’s talk about Fujitsu's latest UMPC, the Lifebook U2010 (in Japan, FMV-BIBLO Loox U), introduced last week at AkihabaraNews (here). It’s a stylish, robust, and light UMPC. The Lifebook has all the connectivity you need, as well as storage capacity. On the downside, it took the Loox U around a minute and a half to boot Windows Vista, and can hold only 1GB of RAM…..

As for specifications, our UMPC comes with an Intel Atom Z530 processor (1.60GHz), a 5.6 LED back lighted touchscreen in WXGA resolution (1280x800), 1GB of DDR2 (max), 60GB of HDD (a 64GB SSD drive is also available), WiFi a/b/g, Bluetooth, SD/CF card slot, 1.3Mpix camera, a standard battery delivering a life span of 5.3 hours. A 4 cell battery providing 11.1 hours of runtime can also be used.

You’ll have a choice between Cool Silver, Fushia Pink, and Black and a special cover for the Japanese market. Fujitsu will release this new UMPC August 29th

We asked Fujitsu when they'll release a notebook like Asus' EeePC or the MSI Wind. Apparently, a new notebook should be available next fall with an Intel Atom processor (probably the same as the LifeBook U2010), Windows XP, but without a SSD drive.

Vista is a poor OS for this mini laptop, but it is rather usable once you turn off all the graphics and feature bloat. I have the first-gen unit (A110 800MHz, 1GB RAM etc.) and Vista boots up in about a minute. As for Bluetooth I got the shockingly tiny 2.0+EDR adapter from Princeton to work nicely with it.

I'll be in Tokyo for two weeks in October so I can't wait to use this with the 1Seg tuner and 4-cell battery.

How hot does it get during usage. The earlier fujitsu got quite hot.

I had no heat issues with the U810 I had for review. I'm rather interested in this unit; I didn't expect much of the U810, and it exceeded my expectations, so I'm betting the U820 will be impossible for me to resist.

It looks incredible and I can't wait to order it. Found a site selling them and they will ship to US. Price is very reasonable. http://www.warehouse123.com/ProductInfo.php?pid=FUJU2010-BLK

I'm going to order it very soon.
