You would think they (Samsung or whoever they contract the shoot out to) would cover that up with some skin-tone polish or something. Geez.

Well yes and no, if you take a look at all the Panasonic W4 and Y4, you will see that they are also placed next to the keyb, now on the Panasonic the CD driver is on the front side.
Having a CD player fix to the Motherboard of the Laptop improve stabilities and reduce vibrations, also the CD can be manipulate regardless of the space around the PC, for example you can put a wall on both side of the PC, you will still be able to access to it.

How would you use a laptop if both the sides are surrounded by walls?

You are a funny man saying that mounting the cd drive in the given manner would reduce any vibrations or so.
All you save is HEIGHT - Keyboard conflicts with the drive underneath normally - not here. Also , you save 0.01 gramm of weight because there is no cd tray mechanism.
well it just looks weird, you know - you have a pretty big pane, and its almost empty on the back ![]()
I prefer slotin mechanisms because the scratch less disk when operated properly

Kudos to Samsung for bringing out the perfect blend for an ultra-portable notebook. The essentials are all there for people who are on constantly on the go - great screen resolution (no more 8-12" 1200x720), incredible battery life (13 hours quoted) in a very light package.
It doesn't hurt that the video card and sound system are decent too (but no biggie for business users) - and honestly - who gives a damn where the DVD is located?!?!
This notebook is HOT and I'm buying it - that's if I can get my hands on one :p (Hopefully Dell will OEM it).

Not with Dell because Dell doesn't outsource High End notebooks to Samsung anymore
