The MS Fingerprint reader is pretty durable, and I think it would be possible to make the reader completely waterproof with some silicone glue to seal out the water from the fingerprint sensor area. As most of you know, the MS Fingerprint device is a copy of the Digital Persona UareU 4000b, and even though they (DP) won't confirm it, I know they've sold a large number of those readers with solid glass sensor protectors (the ones they usually use is made out of silicone). These are virtually waterproof.
We've done a multilingual Time&Assistance application called Cerberus using this tech (and the MS Fingerprint reader). Not waterproof yet, though... http://www.cerberus.com.mx
The site is all in Spanish, but you can read some about Cerberus in English at http://www.lekare.com
