Toshiba in Paris: the Portégé R500

Toshiba presented in Paris the "lightest laptop in the world": the Toshiba Portégé R500.

Two versions will be available, one featuring an SSD Drive (779g) and an other using a good "old" HDD (80 to 160GB) for 220g more (999g). Both are equipped with Toshiba's "Easyguard" technology, understand: shock absorbing, clean keyboard, biometric protection and other things...Another proprietary feature is the "High Density Mounting": the 2 sides motherboard requires only 25% of the available space and is 3 or 4 times lighter than "regular" ones, as a result, a 2.5' DD and disc player can be placed in the remaining space.

The autonomy is said to reach a sweet 10 hours but it will go down to 5 hours if you require more processing power, especially for videos. The HDD version will be out next month, expect a price around 1999€, for the SSD version, wait a bit and save cash as it should hit the shelves in August (price unknown).

the only thing I am missing from this laptop is a LED backlight. If they added that, it would really be the ultimate laptop.

be aware though, that according to toshiba my phone's battery lasts 300h standby. in casual use it lastet only 15h max. send in for inspection, toshiba send it back after two weeks saying the battery "was inside its capacity range"
I will never trust or buy from this company again.
