Sony Launches the VAIO TP1 Without Fanfare

In case you missed it, Sony has officially launched the vaunted VAIO TP1 HTPC and believe it or not, hardly a word has been given to its arrival.

Although it's meant to be the ideal addition to any home, the TP1 lacks an HD optical drive and CableCARD option. And while it offers a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 300GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD writer and an ATSC / NTSC TV tuner, the device curiously only sports a GMA 950 integrated graphics. That said, it includes HDMI / DVI / VGA outputs, but without an HD optical drive or a solid graphics card, what use is it?

If you're looking for more specs, the device features a 4-pin Firewire connector and four USB 2.0 ports.

But if you're into a wireless-capable Vista Home Premium setup and you don't mind dropping a cool $1,599.99 to have one, the VAIO TP1 may be perfect for you.

Well, Yes and No... Yes the Mac Mini is cheaper, but here you have a TV Tuner, HDMI Support, Wireless Keyboard and remote, a better Hard Drive, more Memory, and the Mac Mini is Not a Core 2 Duo CPU base computer. I owned a Mini, I tried to use it has a Media Center and well the lack of usability of the Apple Remote and other stuff made it a bit useless for me...
