In a desperate move, Toshiba sacrifices its HD-DVD player in Japan

It seems that the war is yet to be over between the HD-DVD and the Blu-Ray. After the very attractive prices made by Sony on its PS3 which is not only a Blu-Ray player but also a video game console, Toshiba, after the US, decided to slash the prices on one of its HD-DVD players, the HD-XF2. We are in fair shape to get in Japan a price as cheap as what you guys over in the US had, something like 99$, but Toshiba decided to reduce the price by over 50% on its player, and give you now a discount of 185€ on the HD-XF2.
So from now on, and only on the Toshiba, you will be able to get a nice HD-DVD player for only 154€ in Japan.

Now that you have the facts, let me tell you what I think. Personally I don’t give a XXX of which format is the best, I own a PS3 simply because it gave me both games and HD video; but I am fed up with this war, and lord I am looking forward to seeing Samsung and LG start shipping worldwide universal players. Now shall I put aside the lame attitude of the Toshiba PR people in Japan, and implore both Sony and Toshiba to either continue their stupid war until they will come to pay us in order to use their format, or to stop it once and for all in order to find a better solution to work together. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have their advantages and inconveniences, but by continuing this war you (Toshiba & Sony) are just confusing future buyers who do not want to be stuck like in the past, with the BETAMAX and VHS war… Please learn from the past and get us something cool that we can ALL enjoy!

The only thing this format war has done is totally destroyed the progress HD format adoption. Both camps seemed to just assume that people would be naturally inclined for an upgrade, but the fact is, interest in the field is limited, and then on top of even limited customer interest, this bullshit serves as the final bow at turing off the customer.
In a way this is a good thing as I doubt players would have gotten this cheap this fast with just a single player, but who cares when no one wants a player just for the hassle of it all?
All I can say is good riddance, and I can only hope that FiOS/WiMax + an online distribution model can take advantage of this stagnation to kill the use of physical media for this stuff, anyway.

This war is going to drag for a long time. Microsoft is behind the inferior HD-DVD format, and they are not going to let it go easily.

It is likely Microsoft will do what they always do - throw money at it until either the world gives up and adopts it or Bill Gates goes bankrupt. Somehow the second option seems less likely.
