I think its because most race cars I've seen have it to the right, so this would be a more accurate non-street car configuration everywhere.

Gearsticks ARE on the left for road cars made for the Australiasian, British, Subcontinental and Japanese markets. However nearly ALL racing cars, even those with a right-hand drive configuration have the gearstick on the right.
