wow, samsung doesn't sell in japan? this is news to me, had no idea.
Any idea what kind of brands fall under the category "other"?

Sharp are the only ones making LCD panels in Japan, and it shows. Even though Sony has better electronics, the heart of a TV is the panel and Sharp wins eventually.

Look at LCD and plasma by Philips. Quality wise the best, feature wise OK, price wise not too expensive (but higher then most)

Worlwide Samsung is #1 in LCD sales, followed by Sony, Philips, Sharp and LG(all very close)
