Akiback to the Future: Today, 5 Years Ago

We were browsing in the Akihababara News archives today and came across this 5 year old article (2004/03/03) : The Robot Soldier

Totoro introduced us to a new robot called Nuvo designed by ZMP. As a reminder, it was controlled with a cellular phone or voice commands, could move like a human, and featured a camera to keep an eye on your home when were out or relay pictures a mobile phone via the Internet.

It also offered a degree of verbal communication back to its owner through a built in pre-programmed female voice!

It did have a price... 500,000 Yen (€4000).

That was 5 years ago, nice technology at the time!

In August of 2008, ZMP announced they would begin selling the NUVO for $2500 including a developer's kit which includes the program source code and API. This program is open not only to universities and research organizations, but individuals! The deal includes access to proprietary N2CORE and middleware such as Microsoft Robotics Studio 2008.
