They were active, of course. I think the problem with the fast motion is the temporal assymetry. In other words: one eye is seeing the "past" and another eye is seeing "the future" as both eyes are not presented the same image at the same moment in time.
When movement is fast, the difference in time-space is big and your brain/eyes complain about it (=headaches if you watch for too long).
Passive technology is much better. All is needed is a monitor with 1920x2160 resolution and alternate the polarization of each line for 3D and simply interpolate the pixels vertically for 2D.

How are they going to sell their overpriced active glasses if they opt for passive technology? :D
And yes, probably at that kind of panel size it would be possible to have double density on vertical pixels. Not too sure about realtime interpolation for 2D and its effect on HD footage though. I suspect we'll either end up with half vertical res passive tech or full-res active one. We'll have to wait and see I guess :S
