TAMAGAWA KOHEN : Let’s Visit Tokyo – Tamagawa Koen

Let’s Visit Tokyo – Tamagawa Koen

Today will be a little different, of course you should enjoy the little video we made, but I will try giving you a bit of historical background.

Tamagawa Koen is a public park anyone can enjoy for free, and it has quite a history. It originally was a natural water-tower where people kept rain water clean to be used for both consumption and gardening. These water-towers are now used as a gardens and play-grounds (where the father in the video plays with his baby).

Behind these water towers and unfortunately not available to the public is an ancient Japanese tomb (400 AD, not BC )… Just a couple of meters away from the tomb is a museum where you can get a reproduction of the tomb with some explanation on what ancient Japanese built it. There we can see some ancient pottery, and even a katana, what's left of it anyway.

Very interesting things are clothes, hairstyles and paint worn by ancient Japanese. If you look carefully, and at this time Japan was still untouched by foreign influences, ancient Japanese looked similar to American Indians.

Everything changes.. Clothing, hairstyles changed when the first Koreans and Chinese arrived and mixed with the local population.

Oh by the way, if you want to make Japanese crazy… Just tell them that the first emperors where Korean and that there were even women emperors this until the sixteenth century… One of the first of them was Queen Himiko (check on Wikipedia), who was either Chinese or Korean… Believe you me… this is a sensitive subject.

Now Himiko is just another tourist boat floating around in Odaiba and designed by yet another famous person, Leiji Matsumoto, father of Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock and many more….

I didn't know that there was a Jewish park in Tamagawa.
Shouldn't the title be either: Tamagawa Koen or Tamagawa Goen?

Just asking. Never seen park romanised with an H before.

And if you;re talking about the yayoi (Not Yaoi) period, please find the time to check out the much more interesting Yoshinogari Koen (with a K) a bit below Fukuoka.

It's well worth a visit if you're ever outside of Tokyo

Great video, thank you for the trouble you're going through. And thanks for the small history lesson as well it was quite interesting! Btw why won't they just let ppl in, instead they do a complete reproduction of a tomb even if it is right beside it?

To preserve the original in it's original state so they may actually possibly discover more about it at a later time.

Also to protect it from sweaty tourists that leave chewing gum everywhere. That's standard practice for most digs like this that are deemed historically important. Not just in Japan, but in every country.

Well i understand that much, but on the other hand pyramids - none build a replica, or all the ancient German castles, fortress etc are available to public as well. so i was just wondering why not in Japan But i have an answer now, thank you!
