DIY SSD Drive Test: a RAID5 HDD with 3 Compact Flash

Many say that SSDs are the future of mobile computing and notebooks, but unfortunately they are still pretty expensive, so what about making one yourself? Many had the idea of doing so but too few were able to make it happen, until today. Thanks to Century and GeekStuff4U.com you will be now able to build up your very own SATA SSD thanks to 3 CF, the very same CF that can buy found in many DSLRs.

Even if today we will talk about the SATA version, keep in mind that an IDE version is also available and that both these SSD support either RAID 0 or 5.

Depending of your needs or your budget, you will either have the choice to use 1, 2 or 3 CF at the same time, but remember that 3 CF are needed for a RAID 5 configuration. Our photo gallery and video below will show you the 2 different settings with 3 CF in RAID 0 then RAID 5.

As you will see you do not need, but it is highly recommended and this for performances issues, to use 3 identical CFs in either speed or capacity. Keep in mind that the maximum speed of your all setting will be the maximum speed offered by your slowest CF.

Plus:
Make a cheaper SSD
Raid 5 !
Work with all CF

Minus:
Price if we considerate the DIY SSD + quality/fast CF

Conclusion:
Well images worth a 1000 words so just relax and watch our video, and if you are interested, these DIY SDDs are available here at GeekStuff4U.com

That's totally fascinating. It's good to see solid state memory used in a way that takes advantage of the smaller physical size like this instead of bulking out memory chips so they're the size of a regular drive. This puts three drives into the space of one and lets you get very compact raid.

That said, to be very petty I couldn't clearly read all the labels on your photos because of the narrow depth of field. If you wouldn't mind using a slightly higher f/ number for future this will make tracking down components by serial number easier.

I Would rather buy a single or dual CF to SATA adapter ($35-$80 from Addonics respectively) and spend the saved money on bigger, faster (266x would work for Linux distros) and just use the drive planning on it failing (like with any flash option).
