NEC LCD Technologies’ New 4.1-Inch LCD Modules Boast Industry-Leading Picture Quality
NEC LCD Technologies, along with its sales and marketing channels in the Americas, NEC Electronics America, Inc., today announced that they will begin shipping samples of a new 4.1-inch (10.6cm-diagonal),
thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) module, part number NL8048HL11-01B, at the beginning of October. Incorporating low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology, the new module features wide video graphics array (WVGA) resolution that produces high-quality pictures on portable devices such as ultra-mobile personal computers (UMPCs) and portable multimedia players (PMPs), and on display devices for various small-size broadcasting equipment.
The main features of the new LCD module are as follows.
1. Higher density due to greater integration NEC LCD Technologies has integrated peripheral circuits, including a
gate driver, onto the TFT-LCD glass substrate, thereby reducing the peripheral wiring and the number of connections with external circuits.
As a result, the LCD module achieves a high pixel density of approximately 227 pixels per inch (ppi), allowing characters and images to be clearly reproduced on the screen, making for smooth transitions as the displayed
images change.
2. High luminance and wide color gamut, even with high density The 4.1-inch module boasts high luminance of 350 candelas per square meter (cd/m2), a wide color gamut of 72 percent (NTSC ratio), and a high pixel density of approximately 227 ppi. These features are realized by a combination of a high aperture ratio, achieved by the LTPS TFT, and optimization of the color filters, backlight system and cell design. As a result, the new product enables accurate, bright and vivid image reproduction.
3. Smooth and precise color/grayscale reproduction A 24-bit (8 bits each for RGB) source driver enables independent control of each RGB gamma value and achieves a gamma curve optimized for various purposes. The LCD panel, capable of displaying 16.77 million colors simultaneously, attains precise color reproduction and smooth color gradation by taking full advantage of the wide range of colors.
4. Touch panel, timing controller and DC-DC converter The module is equipped with a touch panel, timing controller, and DC-DC converter that help manufacturers of portable information devices reduce development costs and lead time.
NEC LCD Technologies has been developing higher-quality, value-added products for professional and industrial display applications such as small-size broadcasting monitors, video camera monitors, and UMPCs and PMPs.
“As applications for LCD modules have proliferated, the demand for high picture quality in small-size LCD modules has also increased,” said Masaaki Hiroshima, Product Planning Department Manager, NEC LCD Technologies. “Based on our proprietary value-integrated TFT (VIT) LCD technology - one of our four core technologies - the new 4.1-inch module meets this requirement by achieving industry-leading levels of reproduction quality, pixel density, luminance, and color.”
NEC LCD Technologies will continue to provide high-quality value-added LCD modules by making full use of its core technologies, including VIT technology, and its long-term experience in the design and manufacture of LCD modules.
In addition to the 4.1-inch module, the company is also offering a new 4.3-inch (11 cm-diagonal) color TFT LCD module, part number NL4827HC19-05B, that boasts high luminance of 500 cd/m2 and wide quarter video graphics array (WQVGA) resolution.
