91% of Japanese People Won’t Buy an iPhone, or How Strange Japanese Media Can Be

Rate this News:  BadPoorAverageGoodExcellent
I've been living in Japan for over 6 years now and I'm thrilled to be living here rather than my native France. I have to admit that I've never seen such low quality and ethics when it comes to the press and media in general... you can't imagine how crazy things are here and how stupid too. I've been working in IT industry journalism (if I can call it journalism) as well as automobile journalism for quite some time now (with NihonCar.com and ManualGear.com)... In every case I've had access to data and information that you don’t, giving me a better understanding of what goes on here.

Today I saw something quite “horrific” on the Tech-On website that belongs to one of the biggest and most powerful printing companies in Japan... Nikkei.

This isn't the first time that Tech-On has bashed Apple, remember this oh so nice article on the MacBook Air "The MacBookAir is Badly Designed and Too Expensive to Produce" say Japanese Engineers

And today here's what was said on the front page of their website, "Survey: 91% of Japanese Will Not Buy iPhone” with a nice graphic...
They argue that not being able to not replace the battery on the iPhone is a major issue for Japanese consumers, and why many people won't buy it.

I have to agree that not being able to replace the iPHONE battery is one of the most silly and inconvenient options ever conceived... Yes that's right... but how could they write such a title.

Let’s look closer... “This research was conducted in the wake of the announcement by SoftBank Mobile Corp that it will release the iPhone in Japan (See related article). Targeting Internet users aged primarily 20 to 49, iSHARE asked questions about their intention to purchase an iPhone, as well as other questions and received 402 responses over the Internet.”.

What ? 402 responses over the internet? Sorry for being rude here, but what the hell is that ?!?!?!

1) Let’s get this straight... In ANY respectable sales and marketing school you'll learn that the minimum participants for a valid survey must be at least 1000. Surveys must be performed in a particular way and in different locations for them to be to accurately quantifiable, like face to face or over the phone... An internet survey is bullshit, and can be easily falsified... (cookies can be erased, IPs can be easily changed, email can be faked, name blah, blah, blah...), Basically, one person would be required to reach 402 people in one day.

2) Let’s get back to numbers... 402 persons... ok let’s put this in perspective. In Japan in May, 2008, there were a total of 89,525,000 mobile phone users (3G). And as for Softbank, the 3rd on the list and the company that will receive the iPhone on its network, we have 14,806,000 subscribers... Finally, Japan has 127 million inhabitants. So let’s see thing this way:

-Of the over 89 million mobile phone users (3G) in Japan, this survey represents something like 0,00045% of the users...

-Just for SoftBank and its 14-Million users, these 402 people represent something like 0,0027%....

-Now, let’s get a little crazy and compare these 402 responses to the 127 million Japanese (me included)... We have something like 0,00032%...

So how on earth is something like 0,00045% of mobile phone users representative of all of us?

We also have to consider that neither Apple Japan nor SoftBank are communicating on the iPhone 3G which is due to be released in less than 3 weeks now. As for today, we still have NO IDEA whatsoever where Japanese people will be able to purchase the iPhone and how much it will cost... We called both Apple and Softbank this morning and both were not able/allowed to provide any answers... Come on! How, after just talking to 0,00045% of the entire mobile phone user population, Nikkei can write such pompous title: 91% of Japanese People Won’t Buy an iPhone.

To Tech-On and Nikkei... Stop being ridiculous, stop spreading erroneous information, and start rethinking what journalism is!

From Daimaou (who is not making any friends over at Nikkei).

Atleast they are not lying to the whole world and killing millions testing their new weapons like the west with the help of their media. If Japan don't want IPhone, let it be. They have more advance phones in Japan which no other countries have. Iphone is not a "BIG" thing to them compared to what they have there which are atleast a decade ahead of the rest. We have to stop thinking highly of our selves and expecting others to buy and love our products when its inferior to theirs in reality.

To Surfer> Please point me to these "More Advance phones in Japan" 6 years ago... Yeah for sure, nowadays a Nokia, SE or Samsung can be as good as actual Japanese phones

surveys over the phone, street intercepts, or internet can be skewed by the survey itself or the people answering the questions to the people asking the questions, so you can't say internet surveys are bull. any method can be crap - we need to see the methodology on how they derived the responses.

like these two surveys. notice their sample sizes are also pretty small, but they explain their methodology.

This survey uses people from a research panel but with a smaller sample. notice q3/softbank subscribers - 25% say they may upgrade and q4/non-softbank subscribers - you could say 64% are interested in the iPhone.

This link seems to be what your article is referring to. So if you look pass the sensationalism - about 6% of Club BBQ members will plan on buying an iPhone. it's a free email service, so i'm thinking its the lowend of the market. i'd like to see the income of the respondents.

The battery question is its own unique question. Plus it's after the iphone question. Depending on how the question was viewed (single per page or all questions on page or groups) it doesn't seem to be related to q2.

thing is... the owners of the study have all the data in house. their the ones playing with the data in spss/excel creating tables and analyzing it to kingdom come. for example they could create reports where they compare income levels to age groups and see who's interested - or compare by gender, markets, regions, lifestyle, interests, etc... hell, it's probably true that 6% of low income respondents will upgrade to an iphone, while 25% mid-upper income respondents will upgrade. its how you report the findings most of the time.

Iki stuff like iPhone and MacBook Air are real threat for Nihhon position all over the world. Cell phones are a HUGE market and if iPhone is prefered in Nihhon - the homeland of small devices - the world wide war is over and defeat for Nihhon.

First consider when that poll / sampling was taken.... prior to the announcement of the the new iphone, prior it being officially let know to Japan (and the world) it will be 3G, and to letting it be known that the price would be about 1/2 of 1st Gen iPhones. All things considered, bad timing for a poll which is pretty much useless. Now the facts on tech specs and pricing is officially made know, iShare should go out and do another poll in the wake of post-conference announcement of the iPhone, in contrast to the pre-conference poll they conducted based on existing knowledge of only 1st generation iPhones.

I've been around Softbank shops a number of times already in Tokyo over the past few days. One small shop already had 70 inquiries and it was just a small shop. They won't even take advance reservations (yet) although being overwhelmed with requests.

The test of time will soon tell.

I agree that the study is bullshit. But 9% of the Japanese would mean a 12% market share so I wouldn't call it bashing Apple

It's all docomo's fault; they probably influenced the redaction of such nasty propaganda. On the opposite side, maybe apple and softbank will keep secret until the very end info about handset price,etc...for a suprise effect (?) NTTD must be shitting in their pants hoping not too many jp customers will jump on the new trendy iphone

I would rather take the Iphone tha one of those japanese phones because it is way better looking than the tacky thick flipphones that they offer in japan. Japanese phones are way to big and thick and they are all made out of a tacky colored plastic. I think they all look ugly. Yeah you can say that they have cool features like on seg but why have that when you can't even use in a vehicle. I prefer the phones that we have here in the US.

most people in Japan have 1 Seg TV, they use to watch TV on the train (they don't use the phone for TV in the car - the car has it's own TV)

take good photos/video, surf the web, listen to downloaded music or watch TV and do SMS/MMS/email is what those popular chunky flip phones do.

if iphone can do email/web surfing well it will be a winner. this battery survey is stupid, i bet most Japanese don't even know their current phone has a battery that can be removed.

wouldn't supprise me if AU / DoCoMo (who didn't get the initial release of iphones) "helped" the media with their acticle against Softbank (who did get it)

lets see what the survey says after they are sold out within minutes on release date

How many Japan-only devices like my electronic dictionary have batteries that require a technician to replace?

Almost all of them.

Even the simple watch has a difficult battery replacement, though it's easier than most.

Apple does have a choice to design iPhone and iPod devices for easy access to the batteries but if that's the only reason people won't buy one in Japan, they're not thinking too well.

some1 asked what japan has to offer in comparison to korea. I'd say more reliable cars and ultra-cool massage chairs
BUT samsung is the best electronics company in the world and japanese girls are more easygoing than koreans, which happen to be too traditional and old-fashion sometimes, even more than jap girls, probably because their education is too repressive and it's quite common for teachers to beat and torture students in korea.
BUT I know that's all changing though it may take a while...
