Sanyo Announces a New Xacti Compact HD Camera, the HD800, Hands-On

Rate this News:  BadPoorAverageGoodExcellent

Here's the DMX-HD800, the latest 720p HD camera from Sanyo. Available in Gold, Pink and Black, this 8Mpix camera is capable of recording video in 720p (1280x720) and uses the AVC/H.264 video codec. Receiving the face chaser module, our camera also has an improved interface to quickly download video from the camera to a PC.

The MAJOR improvement as far as we are concerned is the HUGE step forward in video quality. Believe us, the change is AMAZING, compared to the 700. Sanyo also worked very hard on noise reduction, and with these improvements the new HD800 is by far THE real and affordable HD compact camera killer!

SANYO’s Sleek, Slim HD*1 Xacti Digital Video Image Quality Improved
One unit takes both HD videos and high-resolution stills, and easy to use with the Internet!

Tokyo, July 30, 2008 – SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) announces the DMX-HD800, a new sleek, slim high definition dual camera Xacti that can take both stills and videos. The camera sports a compact and light-weight body, and easily saves data onto SD/SDHC memory cards for convenience. The DMX-HD800 will take stills and videos used on a personal computer or for the Web, houses a new three-dimensional digital noise reduction (3DDNR) filter, and adds the ‘Face Chaser’ for both stills and videos with an active scanner visible on the monitor.
On the new product launch, Hideki Toyoda, General Manager of SANYO’s Digital System Company, DI Company Products Planning Department, said, “The DMX-HD800 has not only has it been designed to be sleek and stylish, but it now offers our unique three-dimensional digital noise reduction (3DDNR) filter, which allows clear, beautiful images with simple operation of a dual camera offering high resolution stills and HD videos in a single unit.”

Main Features
Compact, light-weight camera capable of high definition movies compatible with personal
computers and/or upload video data to the Internet
- Easily drag and drop recorded files on to the hard drive or upload to the Internet

- Take either high definition videos (1280 x 720, 720p) or 8.0-Megapixel still images with one
unit

Mic-out?
Say yes, please?
The camera would be perfect for me if only it had mic out...

3ddnr, and chaser for video, and still, was the only extra I read.

Basically the HD700 has exactlythe same, to the T

I thought We see HD 1440x1080i or P and as well as a 60 FPS.

a CmosSensor over a CCD wit h star trek lighting effect

By the pics shown all looks great, not sure what you're saying on comparison stills if the 700 is shown or if it takes a larger pic. one word software

also Firmware would be greatly appriciated for the 700 HD model. thanksfor the info.

What about the most important thing: image stabilizer. I heard the one of the new Xacti HD1010 is even worse than from its predecessor the HD1000.
Unfortunately Xacti Footage always looks so shaky... else I would have bought one long ago.

Who thinks HD700 is the best pocket-720p camera around? Just check out user reviews on amazon and you will see it has got some very narrow angle lens.

Gosh, I just love the Xacti lineups. The form factor is just really cool.

This is certainly sounding like the Sanyo brand we used to know of -- the brand who made good-quality electronics at prices affordable to most. A lot of us remember owning or knowing someone who owned one or more of the portable-audio products, especially radio-cassette units that have come from this brand.
Come on, keep up the good work and offer equipment that offers more for the same price as a Chinese-built no-name import.

The HD800 has a tripod insert on the bottom. Also, the plans to bring this overseas are not yet decided, although there is a rumor that America might be the last place to get it.

that's sweet. if it's under 400 bucks i'll probably buy. i have a portable slik tripod that's laying around doing nothing. attaching the camera to tripod would be great.

a comparison against the HD700 would be interesting. like to see the huge improvement in video quality between the two.

Sanyo is really cool. I like my HD1000 very much. But I'd like Sanyo to integrate some wireless networking features in their next cameras. I posted a bunch of feature requests here http://charbax.com/2008/08/02/my-next-hd-camcorder-should-have-these-features/

Although of course improving noise reduction, adding 1080p mode is perfectly awesome. I want WiFi, HSDPA, USB keyboard, Live video streaming and more stuff like that before I upgrade.

The HD camcorder should become a Internet TV production studio all-in-one. Technology for that is available today, someone just needs to integrate it.

Guess the HD800 will not come to US due to financial meltdown. Can't find a reliable local camera selling the HD800. I ended up getting the camera online from warehouse123.com. Shipping was fast and well packed. Video quality seems as good as the HD1010. The still images are better, thanks to the higher pixels. Its main plus is its small size, which is also its primary advantage over HD1010.

As I have been trying to point out recently, the price of the HD1000 seem too good to be true. Under $500!
