We have been waiting for this little robot iDOG by Sega Toy for a while. Strictly speaking, it's not really a robot but more a distraction toy.

Video of the iDOG

The dimensions of this little device are 116x107x100 and it weighs 170g. It's powered by 3 AAA batteries (not included), and it has 3 functions.

1) It can "play" with you... well, playing is kind of a big term for the interaction you have with the dog, but it will respond to your petting on the tip of its nose or the tail by "singing" a little song or melody or dance a little bit whilst flashing its leds. The iDOG does not have any eyes, but has leds instead.

2) It will keep you company, and plays some tunes in a random way. So he can be a companion whenever you feel a bit lonely.

3) iDOG has the rhythm in its digital blood, and in order to see that in the best possible way, you just have to plug your MP3 player or any other audio source into the dog and it will start "dancing" and displaying a lot of colours with its facial leds. The iDOG has a speaker to play back the music, but the quality of it is not really good, and the noise sounds saturated quite early. another inconvenience is that iDOG makes quite a lot of noise when moving, so the music is not very audible sometimes.

Thanks to GeekStuff4U.com for providing this test-device.

Plus:
Very small
Not expensive
Cute and fun
Distracting

Minus:
Joints are a bit too noisy

Conclusion:
What to say about this product? It's fun, cute and quite compact. In my opinion, it can be the perfect playing partner of your kids, or a small cute thing you keep around the house or the office. It will NEVER replace an AIBO, that's for sure, but for this price, it really is a fun toy. One small drawback could be that it's a tad too noisy when hooked up to an audio source, but other than that, I don't see any problems to follow my example and adopt one (it's sitting next to my desk as I write these words).
